River Therapies is excited to offer Blood Flow Restriction (BFR)Training. BFR is achieved through the application of external pressure over the hip or shoulder. The applied pressure is sufficient to maintain arterial inflow while restricting venous outflow distal to the applied pressure. BFR allows clients to increase muscle strength and hypertrophy while performing light resistant loads. When clients are recovering from surgery or are not able to bear weight on their extremities, optimal muscle strengthening is not an option. Fortunately, with the application of BFR, clients are able to increase muscle strength while only performing at 20% of their 1-repetition maximum strength ability. This increases muscle strength and can speed up recovery and return to a sport or work.
River physical therapists have a firm foundation in anatomy, physiology, therapeutic exercise, the cardiorespiratory system, and clinical reasoning, which are the components of the safe application of blood flow restriction training. Please consult with your physician or call River Therapies at 412-767-5967 to determine if Blood Flow Restriction Training is right for you.
